Forskolin – Here We Go Again – Everything You Need To Know

Forskolin is extracted from the herb known as coleus forskohlii. It belongs to the family of mint and lavender. It is being used from centuries as a medicinal aid for many conditions and medical symptoms. It helps in increasing the production of cyclic AMP, which is responsible for contractility of the heart muscle. There are evidences for other benefits of Forskolin in the human body like for treating hypothyroid, advanced stage of cancer, asthma, aggregation and adhesion. It is also very helpful in preventing the growth of tumour cells in the body.

Even though it is helpful for people suffering from all the above conditions, the bottom line is that there is still no evidence that it is completely safe to be used by human being.

Forskolin and weight loss –

The natural medicines comprehensive database (NMCD) referred Forskolin as “possibly effective” in respect to inhaled medicine for asthma, and as a help for idiopathic congestive cardiomyopathy. It is also mentioned that Forskolin helps in decreasing intraocular pressure. The NMCD has not referred Forskolin useful for weight loss.

The safety rating for Forskolin is “possibly safe”. NMCD mentioned that Forskolin may increase the risk of bleeding disorders during and after a surgery, so it is recommended to stop using the drug at least 2 weeks before the scheduled date.

It is also suitable for weight loss. However, there is no concrete evidence to prove this.

The evidence –

There were studies that were carried out on human beings to test and record the effects of Forskolin. A randomized placebo-controlled double blind trial of Forskolin extract was tried out. The study took place in two groups, 15 men in each. The study went on for 12 weeks.

The subjects showed positive results by showing favourable changes in body composition, a decrease in body mass and fat percentage. They also showed increased lean body mass and bone mass. The subjects were also tested positive for increase in serum free testosterone levels.

It was concluded that even though significant changes were noticed in the subjects, “they did not lose weight”. However, the experienced changes were commendable and were beneficial for people in future.

One more double blind study was conducted where 23 slightly overweight women were selected as subjects. It was yet again proved that Forskolin does not help in losing weight, but other significant changes were recorded and registered.

There were only these two studies, which were tried on human beings. Other research studies were done on rats and were found that it can be effective in preventing obesity caused by diet “in rats”.

Should you trust it or not:

Even though there are no hardcore evidences that could prove that Forskolin is effective in weight loss, it is beneficial to people in treating many other conditions. It is a completely natural product and can or will not harm human body in any possible ways. It is still recommended to use it under supervision of a doctor.
